Roller straightening and tensioning of titanium rods

Titanium rods and titanium alloy rods are commonly used in a variety of industrial applications, including the aerospace, medical device, chemical and automotive industries, among others. When producing and processing these bars, it is usually necessary to control their strength and shape to ensure product quality and performance. So can titanium alloy rods be bent directly?

Titanium rods cannot be bent directly and require special handling and processing to provide the desired shape. Titanium rods are typically hard and brittle materials that cannot be bent as easily as some other metals. To bend titanium alloys, you usually need to use appropriate tools and methods, such as heating and machining, to create a rod that is softer and easier to bend. This process requires special equipment and techniques, and is best done by experienced professionals to ensure no damage to materials or safety issues is caused.

Tension control:

Tension refers to the internal or external force on a material, usually measured in Newtons (N) or pounds (lb). When manufacturing and processing titanium rods or titanium alloy rods, it is necessary to ensure that the tension of the material is within the tension range to avoid damage or shape change of the material.

Tension control is usually achieved through mechanical or electronic systems. These systems can monitor tension and adjust processing if necessary to ensure good consistency.

sequential straightening

Sequential straightening also straightens one piece at a time. The straightening quality mainly depends on the straightening machine pressure and the roller inclination angle. The amount of pressure depends on the alloy type and curvature. For titanium alloys with high strength, the straightening pressure should be larger when the curvature is large, and vice versa. The inclination angle of the measuring rod depends on the diameter of the workpiece. Workpieces with larger diameters should have smaller straightening inclination angles. After major straightening, unqualified workpieces should also be returned for re-straightening. Titanium pipes that cannot be straightened should be sent to a tension straightening machine for straightening.

In production, for workpieces with simple cross-sections, multi-roller straightening with more than 4 rollers (generally 5 to 29 rollers) is widely used. Its working principle is to squeeze the workpiece continuously and repeatedly three times through each roller. Point bending, thereby gradually reducing the variation range of the residual curvature of the workpiece.

Roller straightening:

Roller straightening is a processing method used to adjust the shape of metal materials, usually used in the production of rods, tubes and wires. In the manufacture of titanium rods and titanium alloy rods, this method can also be used to improve the straightness and shape of the rods.

Roller straightening uses a set of rollers that pass along the length of the material and apply force to it to remove excess camber.

Principles of roller straightening titanium rods:

●Generally speaking, the smaller the roller diameter and the greater the number of rollers, the higher the straightening accuracy; a smaller value of roller distance 5 is beneficial to the bite of the workpiece and the establishment of the straightening process.

● In roller straightening, the main function of the first few rollers is to reduce the difference in residual curvature of the workpiece along the length direction, and the main function of the last few rollers is to reduce the residual rate that tends to be uniform.

● The straightening quality mainly depends on the reasonable determination of the reverse curvature of the workpiece under each roller. Use a larger reverse bend rate on the first few rolls (second and third rolls). The reverse curvature of the following roll is determined by the maximum residual curvature just enough to completely straighten the previous adjacent roll.

●The larger the hardening factor 7, the more difficult the material is to straighten. At this time, a larger reverse bending rate, a larger number of straightening rollers, and a smaller roller diameter should be selected.
