The use of titanium alloy tubes in automobile mufflers

Titanium alloy has excellent properties such as high strength, good corrosion resistance, excellent processability, and high heat resistance. Due to its unique sense of luxury and creativity, titanium alloy is often used in car mufflers. So what are the advantages of titanium alloy used in mufflers? Let's take a look.

•Titanium applications in the automotive industry
In the automotive industry, the significance and creativity of mufflers cannot be overstated because they are hidden out of sight and exhaust temperatures are even higher than on motorcycles. Due to high temperature oxidation resistance and heat resistance issues, the use of titanium alloys in special mufflers is limited. In response to such situations, in order to avoid significant deterioration in the formability of titanium alloys, some companies have developed Ti-1.5Al to improve high-temperature oxidation resistance and high-temperature strength. Titanium was developed based on the transformation of engines and catalysts, etc., and it increases the exhaust gas temperature from previous highs to 700~750 degrees, so it is used in car mufflers. In 2009, it registered ASTM standards and obtained patents from the United States, Britain, Germany, Italy, and France.

•Titanium alloy Ti-0.5A1-0.45Si-0.2Nb
Titanium alloy Ti-0.5A1-0.45Si-0.2Nb is considered more promising. Compared with existing muffler materials and JIS Class 2 pure titanium and Ti-1.5Al, this titanium alloy has better high-temperature oxidation resistance. These existing materials cannot be used due to problems such as embrittlement. Consider use in high temperature environments. At the same time, the heat resistance is close to Ti-1.5Al. Compared with JIS Class 2 pure titanium, at 400 degrees, the strength is 3-4 times that of pure titanium, and the tensile strength is 2-3 times that of pure titanium. Therefore, this titanium alloy has the same suitable high temperature resistance properties as Ti-1.5Al. In addition, according to JIS 2 standards, the alloy is expected to have the same level of plasticity as pure titanium.

•The most ideal titanium alloy material
For cars, the temperature of the part after the center pipe is lower, but depending on the type of car, even the exhaust temperature of this part can reach 700~800 degrees. When titanium metal is exposed to such high temperatures for a long time, the edge portion of the surface becomes brittle due to the formation of a hardened layer due to the diffusion and penetration of oxygen. At the same time, peeling of the oxidation state occurs and the titanium metal partially reacts, reducing its strength. In addition, due to the increase in grain size, fatigue strength and embrittlement also decrease. In such a high temperature environment, there are some places where Ti-1.5Al has an incomparable antioxidant capacity. Therefore, if a titanium material can be developed that can not only maintain the high-temperature oxidation resistance of Ti-1.5Al and above, but also maintain the strength characteristics of Ti-1.5Al when molding and processing muffler system assemblies, it will be used for Muffler system assembly molding and processing, which will be the best noise reduction material.
