What is Gr.5|Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy?

Describe

Gr.5 (Ti-6Al-4V) occupies a place among American standard titanium alloy materials, and its domestic name is: TC4 titanium alloy material.
Titanium 6 Aluminum 4 Vanadium is generally considered the "foundation" of the titanium industry as it is the most commonly used titanium alloy over the long term, accounting for more than half of total titanium utilization. It is an α+β composite that can be heat treated to achieve medium strength. Titanium 6 Aluminum-4 Vanadium is recommended for use at temperatures not exceeding 350°C/660°F. Titanium 6 aluminum 4 vanadium has the advantages of good hardness, light weight, forgeability, corrosion resistance, etc., and is widely used in the aviation industry.

Its material formation is basically Gr.5|Ti-6Al-4V. The compound arrangement is: titanium (Ti) balance, nitrogen (N) ≤ 0.05, carbon (C) ≤ 0.08, hydrogen (H) ≤ 0.015, iron (Fe) ≤ 0.40 , oxygen (O) ≤ 0.20, aluminum (Al) (5.5-6.75), vanadium (V) 3.5-4.5

Material Description

As an α+β dual-grade titanium alloy material, Gr.5 titanium alloy, (Ti-6Al-4V) has excellent wide-ranging properties and can work at 400°C for a long time with incredible strength. Due to its excellent high-temperature properties, it is ideally suited for the production of load-bearing parts such as aircraft engine blower rings, fans, sharp edges and housing radiators.

Physical properties

1. Small deformation coefficient: This is a significant feature of TC4 titanium alloy cutting processing, the deformation coefficient is less than or close to 1. The sliding friction distance of chips on the rake face is greatly increased, accelerating tool wear.
2. High cutting temperature: Since the thermal conductivity of titanium alloy is very small (only equivalent to 1/5 to 1/7 of No. 45 steel), the contact length between the chip and the rake face is extremely short, and the heat generated during cutting is not easy to escape. , concentrated in the cutting zone and a smaller range near the cutting edge, and the cutting temperature is very high. Under the same cutting conditions, the cutting temperature can be more than twice as high as when cutting 45 steel.
3. Large cutting force per unit area: The main cutting force is about 20% smaller than when cutting steel. Since the contact length between the chip and the rake face is extremely short, the cutting force per unit contact area is greatly increased, which can easily cause chipping.

GR5 titanium alloy properties

Gr.5|Ti-6Al-4V mechanical properties: tensile strength: σb≥895Mpa, yield strength σb≥828Mpaσ: elongation: δ≥10%.
Gr.5|Ti-6Al-4V Corrosion resistance: Although titanium alloy is very active, has low equilibrium potential, and has a large thermodynamic corrosion tendency in the medium, it is actually very stable in many media, such as oxidizing, neutral and It is corrosion-resistant in weakly reducing media. This is because titanium has a great affinity with oxygen. In air or oxygen-containing media, a dense, highly adhesive and inert oxide film is formed on the titanium surface, which protects the titanium matrix from corrosion. Even due to mechanical wear and tear, it will quickly heal itself or regenerate.
Titanium and titanium alloys including titanium 6 aluminum-4 vanadium are susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement. Gaseous or negative hydrogen can diffuse into metals, forming brittle hydrogen. Therefore, during the processing process, especially the heat treatment and pickling processes, the content of hydrogen must be minimized as much as possible. The product specifications of titanium 6 aluminum-4 vanadium generally stipulate that the hydrogen content does not exceed 150ppm.
