The difference between pure titanium and β-titanium

In modern industry and medical fields, titanium metal has become an indispensable material due to its excellent physical properties, such as corrosion resistance, light weight and high strength. Among the many types of titanium alloys, pure titanium and β-titanium are two common types, each with different performance characteristics and application scenarios.

The difference between pure titanium and β-titanium

1. What is pure titanium?

Pure titanium refers to a metal containing more than 99% titanium and almost no other alloying elements. The main characteristics of pure titanium are its excellent corrosion resistance and good biocompatibility. Due to its high purity, pure titanium is widely used in aerospace, medical, marine engineering and other fields. Pure titanium exhibits good strength and ductility at room temperature, and under the protection of the oxide film, it can effectively prevent corrosion and extend its service life.

The characteristics of pure titanium make it the preferred material in biomedical fields such as medical devices, artificial joints, and dental implants. It does not react with human tissue and has good compatibility with the human body, so it has been widely used in human implants.

2. What is β-titanium?

β-titanium alloy refers to a titanium alloy containing a large amount of β-stabilizing elements, such as niobium (Nb), tantalum (Ta), zirconium (Zr), etc., which can stabilize the β-phase structure and give the material excellent mechanical properties. Compared with pure titanium, β-titanium alloy has higher strength and better toughness, so it occupies an important position in some applications requiring high strength and high wear resistance.

Another notable feature of β-titanium alloy is its good plasticity and processability, which makes it widely used in high-demand fields such as aerospace, military industry, and automotive industry. β-titanium alloy can also maintain good mechanical properties and stability in high temperature environments, and is suitable for parts working at high temperatures.

3. The main difference between pure titanium and β-titanium

1) Composition difference

Pure titanium is mainly composed of titanium, while β-titanium alloy contains other alloying elements that stabilize the β-phase, such as niobium and tantalum, in addition to titanium. It is the addition of these alloying elements that makes β-titanium have higher strength and hardness than pure titanium.

2) Physical properties

Pure titanium has a low density of about 4.5g/cm³ and moderate strength. It has excellent corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance and biocompatibility, and is particularly suitable for the medical and bioengineering fields. In contrast, β-titanium alloy has a higher strength, which can reach 1.5 times or even higher than that of pure titanium, and has better hardness and wear resistance. However, the density of β-titanium alloy is slightly greater than that of pure titanium, usually around 4.8g/cm³.

3) Processing performance

Pure titanium has good ductility and machinability, and is suitable for various processing, such as cutting and welding. Although β-titanium alloy has higher strength, it is relatively difficult to process, especially when processed at high temperatures, surface oxidation may occur, so its processing requires a more sophisticated process.

4) Corrosion resistance

Pure titanium has excellent corrosion resistance in most environments because it contains almost no other impurities, and is particularly suitable for use in highly corrosive conditions such as marine environments. Although β-titanium alloy also has good corrosion resistance, its corrosion resistance is slightly inferior to that of pure titanium due to the presence of alloying elements.

5) Application fields

Pure titanium is widely used in the medical field due to its excellent biocompatibility, especially in implants in dentistry, orthopedics, etc. At the same time, pure titanium is also commonly used in aerospace and chemical equipment. β-titanium alloy is more used in aerospace, military, automotive industry and other fields that require high-strength materials due to its high strength, high wear resistance and excellent processing performance.

As two important titanium alloy materials, pure titanium and β-titanium each have unique performance advantages. Pure titanium occupies an important position in the medical, chemical and other industries due to its excellent corrosion resistance and biocompatibility; while β-titanium has become an ideal choice for high-strength and high-load occasions due to its high strength and excellent wear resistance. Understanding the difference between pure titanium and β-titanium is of great significance for choosing the right material in practical applications.
